Just Life

It's International Dance Day!

IDanceDay If you know me personally, then you know that I love to get my groove on from time to time. Since the tender age of eight, I've always loved the art of dance, even though I was never classically trained.

In the 8th grade, I choreographed my first routine and became hooked! From that moment on (until I graduated from college) I was enthralled in the world of dance: from hip-hop to modern to African, dance became an outlet of self-expression. It also taught me discipline, hard work, focus and team work -- giving me the opportunity to collaborate with some of the most talented people I've ever met.

While I don't dance as much as I would like, I never obliged to hit my two-step, dougie or "the whip" when the moment is right.

Without dance, I don't think I'd be the free-spirited, creative, meticulous and unapologetic individual that I am today. Dance has taught me to accept my vulnerability, and channel it positively to tell a story. In honor of this special occasion, check out a few of my favorite personal dance moments from the past.

Enjoy, and ALWAYS dance like no one is watching.

Use Failure to '#PutYourselfOn'

What I'm going to do right now is go back -- to February 11th, 2014 when I was sitting up in my room, sipping on my favorite wine and scouring the Internet for new job opportunities with my newly updated resume. And it wasn't because I was bored and needed something to do, it was because I was let go from my job the day before.

I'll start off by saying that I wasn't shocked nor emotional about being let go, but honestly the most relieved I have ever felt in all my 25 years of living. For a while, I had this gut-wrenching feeling that I knew I wasn't made for my particular position, but I refused to give up anyway.

My mom could tell from our phone conversations that I wasn't happy. I remember bluntly telling her tearfully, "I feel like I'm failing" over the phone just days before I was let go.

I had mentioned it to a few of my mentors, but assured them I could turn it around. Even my closest friends at the time knew that something was up, but because of my stubborn nature, I refused to believe that I wasn't good enough to for my "dream job." When come to find out, it wasn't at all my dream job, just a gateway to prepare me for what was to come.

During those short six months of employment, I was exposed to a number of great experiences, but I always remained mindful of the reason WHY they hired me.  And trust, I played on those strengths in and out of the work place. Even in the midst of facing adversity, I never lost sight of what I knew I was good at. While my "dismissal" was shocking to others, it gave me an opportunity to finally take a moment to discover what I really wanted to accomplish in my career.

There's always a test in the testimony.

Last year's "plot twist" taught me that in order to be the change I wish to see, I have to boldly (and strategically) seek opportunities in which to have my voice heard. In the words of my homie fellow blogger Michell Clark, I has to quickly learn how to "put myself on." For me, this was a challenge to see how creative I could be with the resources that I had at my disposal. From blogging more about my passion for millennials and social media, to asking for help from mentors, family members and former colleagues, I slowly and purposefully started to rebuild the foundation of my very young career.

Within 34 days of being let go, I was hired by a company that I've grown to admire greatly, and surrounded by amazing individuals that not only wanted me to succeed, but to help me along my professional journey too. Just a constant reminder that God will never give us more than we can handle.

A lot of times when a particular job doesn't work out, we're quick think it is because we weren't good enough. We spend time questioning what went wrong, where we made our mistakes and what we could have done better. And while that is all completely necessary, we must also take time to appreciate what and who we learned from in that experience, and how it was a necessary part of our life's journey.

Looking back, I'm grateful for the short-lived experience I had, and the doors that it ultimately opened.

So the next time you find yourself in a moment where you feel as though you've failed, don't panic. Cry, scream, throw dishes – do whatever you need to do and LET IT GO. As the great C.S. Lewis once said, "There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind."

Be great!

Breathe, Stretch, Shake: 5 Ways To De-Stress After Work

destress_photo.png

Happy Wednesday, Friends! It's been absolutely way too long since my last installment, and I promise I'll get better with that! But yesterday, I took a trip to the dentist (one of my favorite things to do, actually) and while everything was in pretty excellent shape, my dentist noticed that there was evidence of me grinding my teeth.

Now, I'm sure some of you are wondering, "Why on Earth is Chasity sharing with us her tales of dental hygiene?"  Well friend, because the grinding of teeth is usually directly connected to stress.

We love it, we hate it and some of us even thrive off of it — but the truth of the matter is that stress is unhealthy and can impact us in more ways than one. In that moment, sitting in the dentist chair, I had to sincerely think about the things that could (or do) mildly stress me out from time to time. The first thing that came to mind? Work.

Don't get me wrong -- I absolutely enjoy the work that I do. But as many social media strategists can tell you, our work does require us to be connected and "on" constantly. Interestingly enough, there was a recent study released that stated social media has more of an effect on women than men. Because so many of us stay glued to our iPhones, iPads and laptops, there's so surprise that we have the ability to internalize the things that we see as we scroll. And while I love my millennial generation dearly, we can sometimes have the tendency to jump to quickly to conclusions based on something we see on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. The second connection I made is that while I do work in social media, my primary field is public relations — which was listed as the 6th most stressful job in America by Forbes in 2014.

Some would think I'm doomed, but being the optimist that I am, I've come up with five ways you can de-stress after a long day of work:

1. Kick off your shoes and relax your feet — literally. I find myself heading straight to my computer as soon as I walk in my door, but there's so relieving about snatching off your shoes, throwing on some sweatpants and just sitting for a moment. I'm sure for many of us commuting to and from work is an adventure, so just take this personal moment to inhale and exhale.

2. Phone a friend or a family member. Once I've had a minute to catch up with myself, I always pick up the phone to chat with my mom, dad, and/or sisters. It's comforting to hear their voices, crack jokes and get the 4-1-1 on what happening in their lives. After chatting with them, I always feel re-energized and a bit calmer.

3. Read a book! Pour yourself a cup of tea (or in my case, a nice glass of wine) and pull out your favorite book. While it's tempting to watch TV for hours on end, we stare at screens all day and that's even more tiring for our eyes. Need suggestions for books to read? 4. Write down your thoughts. I absolutely love to journal, and have been doing it since I was younger. I've collected so many cute notebooks over the years and just filled them with my thoughts, ideas and dreams. It's totally possible to get lost in yours thoughts by writing, and you'll be surprised how much better you feel once you've put everything on paper.

5. Exercise. Got a gym membership? Great! A favorite class to take at your local community center or dance studio? Even better. But because sometimes those things may be out of the way, I have learned to turn to YouTube for my daily workout. Cassey Ho of Blogilates as an encyclopedia of great workouts that range from 5 to 20 minutes. Not only is she encouraging, but she challenges you to push yourself in order to get the body you want! There's nothing like getting in a good work out before hitting the bed, and you'll sleep even better too!

So there you have it! How do you unwind after a long day at the office? Tweet me your methods, or leave a comment below!

The Focus for 2015? To Manifest.

manifest_365.png

Happy New Year! Now that 2015 is here, I'm so excited to set new goals, try new things and push myself beyond my comfort zone.

Last year, I chose three words that would serve as my focus for the year. They were: consistency, faith and excellence. I put those words up above my desk in my room, wrote them down in my journal and did my best to apply them to the many facets of my life.

This year, I've chosen just one word: MANIFEST. The origin of this particular word for me stems from a gospel song with the same title sung by Walt Whitman and the Soul Children of Chicago. Each time I hear this song, it's a reminder that I've been blessed to experience so many amazing opportunities. Additionally, I've been blessed with tools and gifts to not only make my dreams come true, but to help others reach their full potential as well. That's why this year, I really want to focus on living with intention. From my professional life to personal endeavors to the people I interact with, I want everything I do to be purposeful and meaningful.

Throughout the year, you'll see me using #manifest365 on my social media accounts, not only to hold myself accountable for my goals, but to encourage others to live intentionally.

I'm so excited to share this journey with you all, and I challenge each of you to finally do those things that you've been putting off for so long. Believe in yourself and your ability to create dopeness, and you will be surprised what amazingness with come to pass.

Here's to a great new year!
