#TechTuesday: 3 Ways #Snapchat Can Enhance Your Personal Brand

snapchat_071.png

Happy #TechTuesday! I know, I know - it has been quite some time since I've done a #TechTuesday post, but never fear! I'm keeping my ear to the streets about the latest in tech and social media and be sure to share with you all the latest!

So, Snapchat. In 2013, I downloaded 'Snap' and couldn't stand it. Perhaps it was because I was only following three people and didn't understand its purpose since there was Instagram, but this app annoyed me to no end. Fast forward to April 2015 and I have found myself obsessed with snapping my morning commute, watching my friends' stories and so much more. It's like we're hosting our own reality shows that can be watched instantaneously!

I believe that since its inception, many brands have learned how to brilliantly use Snapchat to engage with their audiences by meeting them where they are. As of late, we're seeing major events like Bonaroo, the NBA finals and even the announcements of presidential candidates shared on Snapchat as a means to empower consumers to craft their own personal experience. Similar to how Twitter gives us the power to share and react to breaking news, Snapchat offers its users (specifically millennials) to creatively document any and everything.

With that, here are three ways I think Snap can enhance your personal brand:

   1. You're not just having a conversation with yourself, but with everyone else. Similar to Twitter, Snapchat gives you the opportunity to speak your piece and then engage in a dialogue with your peers - only this time they can response via text or video. Whether you're watching an episode of #OITNB, waiting for the train, graduating from college or watching Hillary Clinton deliver her first campaign speech, Snapchat gives us a platform to uniquely bring our conversations to life and to those who may not have the chance to participate.

   2. Snapchat helps you define your voice through repetition. The one question I've gotten repeatedly since rejoining Snapchat is, "why do you wake up so early?" And how do my friends know that I wake up early? Because I've made it a regular part of my daily story. Just like any other brand, the more you do something, the more likely it will be remembered and it will become apart of you. I am a morning person to the core – so it's natural for me to get up at around 5:30 AM to get my day started. Snapchat gives you the chance to bring your friends into your world organically and authentically. Which brings me to my final point...

3. Snapchat allows for you to keep it 💯. Let's face it – not many people are shy about sharing their personalities in social media. Yes, you can show your true colors on Facebook and Twitter, but those mediums are often static and conversation can drag on forever if you let it.

With Snapchat however, thoughts can be short, sweet and to the point. Our snaps give us the chance to tell the when, what, how, why and where in less than a minute. And while snaps don't last long and can be deleted, it's the ability to put raw content out in the universe with the touch of a button that keeps Snapchatters coming back for more.

Personally, I like the fact that Snapchat's platform hasn't changed too much over the years. And the filters are an incredible feature that offer an even more stylistic touch.  So what do you love most about Snapchat? Leave me a comment below  and send me a tweet! Millennial on a Mission: Laurence Bradford

While this week's "Millennial on a Mission" does many things, everything ties back to technology in someway. As a self-taught developer and the founder of LearnToCodeWith.Me, she has put together resources for people teaching themselves how to code. As she likes to say, "Get digital skills, be happy." Ladies and gentlemen, meet Laurence Bradford.

LBmoam

Hailing from Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, Laurence attended college in Boston at Emmanuel College where she studied history. "Today I am basically doing the opposite as far as disciplines go," she says. Currently, she the Tech Careers Expert for about.com, but also does website strategy consulting. "Essentially, I look at both a site's content (written, images, etc.) and its design/layout," Laurence says. "Because for a great website, both are vital."

CCWhat has inspired you to pursue your choice of career? Who are some individuals you admire in and out of your field of work? What challenges have you faced in building your business/brand, and what have you learned from them?

LB: After college, I decided to teach in Thailand. While there, I began keeping a travel blog. My boyfriend Matt built me a personal website as a Valentine's Day gift, which led me to want to make changes on my own to the site layout and design. Whenever I wanted to make a minor change, I had to ask him and it was driving me crazy! So I began teaching myself basic WordPress skills.

Around that same time, (I was still in Thailand at this point.) I kept reading and hearing about the demand for tech workers in the US. It sort of clicked, “Wow I like this. And there’s a demand for people with these skills!” One thing led to another, and here I am today: the founder of Learn to Code With Me and the Tech Careers Expert for About.com!

There are a number of people that I admire professionally, but the first few that come to mind are Neil Patel, Pat Flynn, Marie Forleo and Danielle Laporte.  I love her quote, "Launch and learn. Everything is progress." It’s one of the quotes I live by.

Right now I struggle with this: Knowing when to do something yourself, or hire someone to do it. I fail everyday. I start things I can't finish. I can't find answers to problems. I freak out because I spent too much money on ___ and now I worry about paying my credit card statement. But if you're not failing, you're not doing something right. If you succeed at everything you do, you're not challenging yourself enough. So I try to view failures as a learning opportunity. And a way to help others learn from my mistakes.

"Some days it's really freaking hard. But when it comes down to it, I know it's better than the alternative: sitting in a lackluster cubicle, working towards another person's dream. (Translation: working for someone else, and not yourself.)"

To Laurence, being a "Millennial on a Mission" means not taking “no” for an answer, and chasing your dream even when it seems like no one is supporting you. "It took me months to get my site (Learn to Code With Me) to 100 email subscribers," Laurence recalls. "It's easy to let the numbers discourage you. But if you're passionate about what you're doing, it's worth it. Don’t let the little things distract you from your larger goal." When it comes to achieving her dream on a daily basis, it's important to know that you can't be 100% daily.

"You need to recharge the batteries, and resting is really, really important. But... I work a lot. I learn from failure. And I always try to turn it into a positive." Her advice to anyone out there who is afraid or hesitant to live their dream? Think of what our ancestors went through to get us here. "The "risks" we take today are typically so small in comparison to what they went through. Today, everything is accessible, and we are so blessed. We are doing a disservice to all of our grandparents and great grandparents and great great grandparents by not taking risks. The time is now to stop living in our comfort zone and to start following our passions."

#TechTuesday: #TIDALforALL? Not Quite, And Here's Why.

tidal-for-all-jay-z-500x281.jpg

Happy Tuesday, folks! I know I've filled your feeds with tons of #WhoRunTheWorld content all month long, and I thank you for rocking with me. But now, it's time to get back to our regular scheduled programming.

Yesterday, JAY Z, along with about 15 of the world's most recognizable names in music, announced the launch of a new music streaming service called "TIDAL."

Initially, when HOV announced last December that he had purchased the Hi-Fi music service from Norway's Aspiro, I thought it would be yet another Shawn Cater boss move - which it is. This was also at the time that pop princess Taylor Swift stripped her latest album "1989" from Spotify.

Now, this post is in no way shape or form to diss JAY Z, or those artists who have signed on to the TIDAL wave. (Hehe.) I've always had respect for Mr. Carter's business acumen, his creativity and his thoughtfulness toward bringing his art closer to his consumer.

However, as a consumer of music for most of my life, I'm just very interested as to how this "new experience" will benefit the consumer more than the artist. A number of questions ran through my mind as I was watching this press conference yesterday: How much did each artist have to front? Will they get more money by bringing their music to TIDAL instead of keeping it on Spotify? What happens (if and when) the company goes public? If it ain't about the money, then why is a subscription so darn expensive?

As lengthily explained by multi-Grammy award winner Alicia Keys, TIDAL is an artist-owned venture that looks to bring content exclusively to its consumers. Similar to the very popular music streaming service Spotify, TIDAL's platform will "preserve the value of music for fans, artists and the industry as a whole." It is ultimately looking to put the power of sharing music back into the artists' hands, making them feel more powerful in sharing their hard work, blood, sweat and tears.

"I'm happy for you all, and I'm going to let you finish, but Spotify has best FREE music streaming service of ALL TIME!"

For starters, TIDAL is looking to charge music fans at the most $20/month for their service. While there is an option that is $9.99/month, how much different from this is Spotify? Or Pandora? According to an article from Tech Crunch, Spotify recently reported that it has 15 million PAID users, with 60 million subscribers worldwide. How will TIDAL look to capture the attention of those listeners? (Oh right, with Beyonce.)

Additionally, the music that consumers will be receiving is supposed to be of the highest digital quality. Am I going to need certain headphones to hear every spine-tingling whisp of the high-hat, or heart-thumping rattle of the 808?

Because Twitter was all the range yesterday during the #TIDALforALL announcement, here are some of my favorite tweets from fellow music enthusiasts who are too scratching their heads about this new movement:

https://twitter.com/MichellCClark/status/582670405518790656

Now, time for a final thought.

I respect the direction in which Mr. Carter and his peers are trying to take music distribution, but what needs to be understood is that consumers that have supported their favorite artists for YEARS don't see the value-add in paying MORE money for a "music experience" that already exists. Furthermore, I'm already purchasing your music on iTunes, watching your YouTube and VEVO videos, liking your photos on Instagram AND breaking my neck to get tickets to your next concert. If EYE am going to pay $20/month for your music to stream in my house, it better damn well sound like I'm right there in the studio with you.

Another note: if Mr. Carter and his peers want to take this #TIDALforALL movement a step further, make it a SOCIAL experience. Show support for upcoming artists looking to learn how to adequately launch their careers in such a lucrative industry. Truly provide a service that fans will not only want to pay for offers to spend more money or simply 'behind the scenes' footage of you honing in on YOUR craft, but a way to create a wave of new artistry and industry thinking will empower the next generation of Kanyes, Beyonces and Rihannas to think differently.

That's just my two cents, but hey, what do I know? I'm just a music lover.

#TechTuesday: Google Is Coming For Your Tweets (& How You Can Prepare)

new-post021715-e1424201430947.png

Happy #TechTuesday (and #Snowday) friends! Last week, I celebrated my 6th Twitterversary, and it really got me to thinking about how much Twitter has evolved since its inception. From the explosion of #hashtags, to now the ability to group chat with your favorite Twitter friends, my favorite social network is all grown up!

And of course with growth, comes change. I remember the day that my news writing professor made it mandatory for us to create our own Twitter accounts. In the spring of 2009, I had NO IDEA what Twitter was, and really didn't understand its purpose. But soon enough, I found that it was probably the best way to connect with new (and old) friends instantaneously, and receive the most timely of news. Additionally, Twitter gives employers of the past, present and future a glimpse into your thoughts, and what type of things you like to share on the daily.

Recently, Twitter announced it has inked a deal with Google, and within the next few month users' tweets will show up in Google search. According to an article from TIME Magazine, this new partnership will give Google access to the live tweets of almost 300 million followers. There are many reasons for this partnership, but Twitter's CEO Dick Costolo has made this deal in order to increase the number of users, as it looks to compete with Facebook and Instagram.

Because we all know that search engines can be our best and worst of friends, it's best to be prepare for how this new partnership can impact your tweeting. Here are three tips on how to you too can tweet a little bit smarter:

1. Think BEFORE you tweet! This goes with out saying, but it is IMPERATIVE that you are thoughtful when it comes to those 140 characters you chose to send. Not all of us (yet) are blessed enough to be millionaires and spend our afternoons throwing ridiculous amounts of shade without worrying about the repercussions of our actions. To avoid any trouble, just worry about yourself, and if you don't start none, there won't be none.

twitter analytics

2. Take advantage of Twitter Analytics. Did you know that Twitter gives you the opportunity to see exactly how your account is performing on a daily basis? If you click on the icon of your Twitter avatar in the top right and scroll down to 'Analytics', you'll be directed to another website that will show you all of your Twitter data going back to 2012. If you're a social media data nerd like me, you can see how your followers are engaging with your content, the most popular topics that you tweet about, and how much your following has increased. Such a cool tool, and it's free too!

3. Request your archive. Have you ever pondered on what tweets you shared with you first started your account? Well, now you don't have to wonder! Another cool (and free) tool, Twitter gives you the opportunity to see all of your tweets dating back to the beginning! While you most likely won't be able to change what you've already shared, it does give you the chance to look at how much your personal brand as evolved since your account's inception. Just click on your avatar icon in the top right hand corner, and scroll down to 'Settings'. Once you reach your Settings page, scroll down to the bottom and click the "Request Archive" radio button. Within a few minutes, a link to a zip file of your archived tweets will appear in your inbox. It's always funny to me to walk back down memory lane with my tweets.

And there you have it! It's not clear if this will also have an impact on those Twitter accounts that are locked, but I'm sure Google will figure out how to get around that in due time.

As always let me know what you think in the comments below, or Tweet me!

Happy Tweeting!

#TechTuesday: When Facebook & Instagram Were Down, Twitter Saved The Day

follow_newpost-e1422360605673.png

Happy #TechTuesday! If you were up around the 1:20 AM hour like many of us night owls, you found that Facebook and Instagram all experienced an outage worldwide for about 40 minutes. Whenever one social network stops working, it always amuses me how everyone flocks to another, to talk about that social networking site being temporarily out of service.

Facebook released a statement to USA Today saying:

"Earlier today many people had trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram. This was not the result of a third party attack but instead occurred after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems. We moved quickly to fix the problem, and both services are back to 100% for everyone."

Also, because Tinder relies heavily on Facebook connectivity, it experienced a moment of silence too. Once the services were back up and running, everyone's chill returned and many of us went back to sleep.

Below are a few funny reactions to this morning's #SocialMediaMeltdown:

Where were you during #FacebookDown? Sleep? Scrolling through your Tumblr feed? Curled up in the fetal position under your bed? Sound off!
